The mystery of Salzburg’s missing mini Mozarts

Mozart emerged unscathed from the monument wars of 2020. No one vandalized his statues over the alleged racism of The Magic Flute or the orientalism of The Abduction from the Seraglio. Perhaps his reputation was helped by The Marriage of Figaro, with its challenge to aristocratic privilege. In any case, the bronze statue of the composer in Salzburg’s Mozartplatz had already been darkened by decades of exposure to the elements.
